A lot of us have been reading labels, checking the sugar content, and tracking calories when we're grocery shopping today, haven't we? All of this is an effort to make better decisions that reward us in the long run. But that does not mean that we can't enjoy a good glass of wine once in a while.

Here's the thing, though: wine does not have to be extremely sugary to taste good. In fact, some amazing bottles and cans keep wine crisp, balanced, and remarkably low in sugar. Just Enough Wines does exactly that, offering premium wine that is conscious, convenient, and full of flavor.

In this blog, we will get into why no-sugar-added wine is worth paying attention to, what the benefits of sipping smarter are, and some of our standout picks for enjoying wine in a way that fits today's lifestyle.

Why Sugar Shows Up in Wine

Wine begins with the natural sugars present in grapes. As it ferments, the yeast added to the must eats away at the sugar and turns it into alcohol. The process can be stopped early on, leaving a hint of sweetness, or it can be continued fermenting until it's "dry", without any sugar left.

This is where the term residual sugar (RS) comes in. Residual sugar is the natural grape sugar left behind after fermentation. Whereas added sugar is what winemakers may include to adjust the sweetness of the wine. This is not something you'll find in our wines.

Does wine always have sugar? Not always. Sugar-free wines go through full fermentation, which means all the natural sugars from the grapes are converted into alcohol, leaving no sort of residual sugar behind. Depending on the style, wines can range from 0 to 220 grams per liter of sugar.

Sugar-Free vs. Low-Sugar vs. No-Sugar-Added Wines

There are quite a few options available while purchasing wine. A few of those options are the varying amounts of sugar present in the wine, why styles can range from Very Dry to Very Sweet, depending on the residual sugar content found in the wine.

  • Sugar-free wine : Been through complete fermentation, meaning there’s no residual or added sugar left behind. Perfect if you’re watching your carb intake or doing a  Keto diet.

  • Low-sugar wine : A bit of the natural sugars gets left behind as residual sugar, making it a tad sweeter. Still better than most traditional wines.

  • No-sugar-added wine : No added sugar, although the natural sugars from the grapes get left behind.

Opting for a low-carb diet? Pick no-sugar-added wines from Just Enough Wines. It tastes delicious without compromising on your diet plans.

Health & Lifestyle Benefits of Low-Sugar Wine

Low-sugar wine is so much more than just the taste. It’s about how it blends into your lifestyle. Comparatively fewer calories than the traditional alternatives allow you to have a much more balanced approach to enjoying wine without second thoughts. The lower carb content also fits the lifestyle of those who prefer a keto diet and paleo plans. The absence of added sugar further helps in avoiding quick sugar spikes, which can eventually leave you sluggish.

The process of making the wine matters to us as much as the quality we provide. We follow a very conscious wine-making process. This reflects that the grapes we use come from SIP or CSWA-certified vineyards and are sustainably produced from start to finish.

How to Spot Low-Sugar & Keto Wines

Looking for low-sugar or keto wines tends to get easier once you know what you should be looking for. Labels with the words “dry” or “Brut” signal a lower-sugar content.

Another indicator would be the ABV level (about 11-13%), indicating most of the sugar has been converted into alcohol during the fermentation. Knowledge on where the grapes were grown can help, too. Premium AVAs are known for a cleaner, more balanced version of varietals, excluding the unnecessary additives.

With Just Enough Wines’  cans, you get what you are looking at. No added sugars and no unnecessary additives. Just sustainably made wines with a natural consciousness from the start to the end.

Comparing Calories in Wine

The caloric count in a wine depends on the ingredients utilized and the fermentation procedure. Sweet style wines typically contain about 100-120 calories per glass, which does eventually add up glass after glass. A dry, no sugar-added wine, on the other hand, has about 90-100 calories per glass. The same flavors without the excess calories? Seems like a win!

Which wine has the least amount of sugar calories? Dry red and whites often carry the least amount of calories. Naturally low in sugar and pack a solid flavor profile.

Tips for Enjoying Low-Sugar Wine

Want to enjoy your wine even more? Here are some tips and tricks that can elevate your experience:

  • Serving Temperature : Whites are best served at about 50-55°F. Reds should be served at a temperature that is just slightly less than room temperature so that the wines will present their full flavor and have a smoother mouth-feel.

  • Pairing : Grilled veggies, lean protein (cured meats), and, lastly, the classic cheeses pair very well with most wine varietals. Forgetting cheese would be a crime you would not want to commit.

  • Portioning It : Each of our wine cans equates to about 1.5 glasses, just enough to enjoy without overpouring.
